Renewing OT Compact Privileges With Your Home License

OT Compact privileges do not renew. They expire on your home license's expiration date, grace periods do not count, and you must buy each one again after your home license renews. A Commission policy effective September 10, 2026 made the no-grace-period rule explicit. How to keep working without a gap.

OT Compact privileges do not renew. Each expires on your home license's expiration date, ignoring any home-state grace period, and after you renew your home license you must purchase each privilege again in CompactConnect, paying the $75 Commission fee and the state fee each time. Continuing education is due only in your home state.

OT Compact privileges do not renew on their own. Each one expires on the date your home state license expires, and after you renew the home license you buy every privilege again. The OT Compact Commission's Before You Apply page says it directly: "Your OTC privilege(s) to practice expire when your HSL expires," and "each time you renew your HSL, you will need to purchase a new OTC privilege to practice in all of the states in which you plan to practice."

Does a grace period on my home license help?

No. A Commission policy that took effect September 10, 2026 settles it. The policy says a privilege's renewal deadline "is the home state license expiration date," that the compact "does not acknowledge later grace period expiration dates," and that CompactConnect "automatically displays eligibility statuses as 'Inactive'" after the expiration date your home state reports.

So if your home state lets you renew up to 30 or 60 days late without penalty, that grace covers your home license only. Your privileges end on the original expiration date regardless. The Before You Apply page warns that practicing on an expired or deactivated privilege leaves you "subject to that state licensing board's authority and accountability."

Do the boards say the same thing?

Yes. The Virginia Board of Medicine, which licenses OTs, tells privilege holders their Virginia privilege "will expire on the same date as your home state license" and that "renewing your home state license will not automatically renew your Virginia compact privilege." The West Virginia Board of Occupational Therapy puts it in capitals: privileges "DO NOT renew automatically upon renewal of the home state license."

How do I keep working without a gap?

  1. Renew your home license early. Do it in the first days of your state's renewal window, not the last. A new privilege takes its expiration date from your home license, so buy it once the renewal shows on the board's records.
  2. Meet your home state's continuing education. The Commission's FAQ says you "only need to complete CEUs for their home state," so your home state's renewal rules are the ones that keep everything alive.
  3. Repurchase each privilege in CompactConnect. You pay the $75 Commission fee and the state fee again for each one. See what a privilege costs.
  4. Recheck each remote state's requirements. Fees can change on 30 days' notice under OTC Rule 6.2, and a state's jurisprudence instructions say whether its exam repeats. See jurisprudence requirements.
  5. Confirm the new privilege before your next visit. Virginia, for example, says proof of a Virginia privilege is on its public license lookup.

The Section 4A requirements must still be true at every repurchase: an unencumbered home license, no encumbrance on any license, and a background check on file with your home board. The model law says you "must comply with the requirements of Section 4A to maintain the Compact Privilege" (Section 4B).

Can I buy a privilege right before my home renewal?

You can, but it expires with the old home license. A privilege bought two months before the home license expires lasts two months and costs the same as one bought the day after renewal. If the timing is flexible, renew the home license first, then buy.

What else ends a privilege early?

  • Discipline on the home license. Section 7H says privileges in all member states are deactivated "until all encumbrances have been removed from the State license."
  • Moving. A new primary residence means a new home state, and your privileges need a home license there. See your home state and the OT Compact.
  • Removal by a remote state. A remote state can remove its privilege, and Section 4H can make you ineligible for privileges elsewhere for at least two years.

How do we keep track of it?

Our Annual Renewal & CE Compliance service ($299 per license, per year) keeps one calendar for your home license, any other licenses and every privilege, logs your CE against your home state's rules, and reminds you to repurchase each privilege the week your home license renews. You complete and pay for each repurchase yourself in CompactConnect, as the Commission requires; we tell you what is due, when, and what each state needs first. For multi-state OTs who also hold regular licenses, see compact privilege or a state license?

Common questions

Does my OT Compact privilege renew when I renew my home license?
No. The Commission and the boards in Virginia and West Virginia all say privileges do not renew automatically. You purchase each one again after the home license renews.
Does my home state's grace period extend my OT Compact privileges?
No. A Commission policy effective September 10, 2026 says privileges end on the home license's original expiration date, and the compact does not recognize grace periods.
Do I need CE for every state where I hold an OT Compact privilege?
No. The Commission says continuing education is required only for your home state.
Do I pay the $75 Commission fee again at renewal?
Yes. Each repurchased privilege carries the $75 Commission fee plus that state's fee, both non-refundable.
