What OTs miss in Michigan

Can I practice in Michigan on an OT Compact privilege?

Michigan has enacted the OT Compact but is not issuing privileges yet. Until it does, practicing here takes a Michigan license, and a Michigan license does not yet give you a privilege anywhere else.

  • Enacted, not issuing yet

Can an OT licensed in another state get a Michigan license by endorsement?

OTs licensed in another state apply by endorsement. With five or more years of licensure elsewhere, they need a past NBCOT pass and Michigan's laws and rules exam; with under five years, they also show ACOTE or WFOT education. Every license held must be disclosed and verified.

  • Endorsement route available

Citation: Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.1226

  • State jurisprudence exam

What OTAs need to know in Michigan

The OT verifies the OTA's training and license, completes the evaluation before delegating, sets either general or direct supervision based on the OTA's education, training and experience, provides written protocols, and keeps a record of OTAs delegated to.

How often does a Michigan OT license renew?

Renewal every two years requires 20 contact hours, at least half live and interactive, including one hour on pain and symptom management. Licensees also need one-time human trafficking training and implicit bias training.
