What OTs miss in Ohio

Can I practice in Ohio on an OT Compact privilege?

Ohio is issuing OT Compact privileges (since January 12, 2026). An OT or OTA whose home state is also issuing can apply for a privilege to practice here through CompactConnect, and must complete the application personally.

  • Jurisprudence exam required for a privilege

Can an OT licensed in another state get a Ohio license by endorsement?

Ohio licenses by endorsement if you hold a current license in another state or territory, or current NBCOT certification, and have never held an Ohio license. You still need an accredited education and a passed NBCOT exam. Anyone with under 250 practice hours in the past five years may face added requirements such as CE or mentorship.

What OTAs need to know in Ohio

The supervising OT need not be on site but must be available at all times. Supervision must happen at least weekly for an OTA in their first year of practice and at least monthly after that, and co-signing notes alone does not count.

How often does a Ohio OT license renew?

OT licenses renew by June 30 of odd-numbered years and OTA licenses by June 30 of even-numbered years. Renewal requires 20 contact hours, including one hour of ethics, jurisprudence or cultural competence and one hour of mental health or substance use. No CE is due at the first renewal.

  • Renews every 2 years
  • 20 CE hours per cycle
